Palletizer

A palletizer is a special machine capable of building a complete unit load on a pallet. Although the most common application is for cases, some palletizers can also handle sacks and bags. A less common palletizer application would be for special products such as sheet stock. There are two general methods employed for automatically building a full pallet. One makes use of a fixed position or overhead gantry robot with end effectors suited to the individual loads, such as a vacuum lifter or a gripper. The other method employs more complex mechanisms for forming pallet layers off line, one at a time, and then shifting or transferring each successive layer onto the pallet as it is lowered via a lift/lower table.[1]

Types of Palletizers

Semi-Mechanized Palletizer

Semi-mechanized palletizers use operators to arrange items into the desired pattern for each layer of the unit load. A powered device is then used to transfer layers onto a pallet and then lower the load for the next layer to be arranged.

Robotic Pick and Place Palletizer

A robotic pick and place palletizer is a fully automated palletizer. The major constraint on such a palletizer is its capacity, which is typically six cycles per minute (see cycle time).

Conventional Stripper Plate Palletizer

A conventional stripper plate palletizer is another type of fully automated palletizer. Unlike the robotic pick and place palletizer, an entire layer is placed on the pallet at once. This allows for increased throughput and greater capacity (typically 30-180 items per minute).[2]
