An Application Identifier (AI) is a specific number that appears after a Function Code 1 in Code 128, Data Matrix or DataBar bar code types to encode certain types of information. Multiple AIs may be included in a single bar code symbol provided that variable length AIs, such as 21 which is used to encode serial numbers, are included last.[1]
