An air film device is used to enable precision positioning of heavy loads. A thin film of compressed air (10–50 psi) is used to float loads of up to 300,000 lbs. so that a horizontal push of 1 lb. can move a 1000 lb. load. The floating action enables the load to be rotated or translated in any direction in the horizontal plane. They require a smooth floor surface against which air streams underneath the load can push.
Air film devices are often referred to as "air pallets," and can be used in place of cranes and hoists. They can be used in warehousing as the mechanism to convert stationary racks into sliding racks.[1]
